Where are you now??
It is important to understand fully just where you are coming from. What you are doing now and where do you want to be?
Identifying the steps necessary to move from where you are now to where you want to be.
Identifying your career anchors.
These are your own personal values, the things that you would not give up if you were forced to make a choice. These could be described as the patterns of self-perceived talents, motives and values that guide, constrain, stabilize and integrate your career.
What do you want more of/less of in your working life; in the future?
You need to know what you want and what you want to avoid. What would be the trade-off?

Careers are like journeys. What will you take with you and what can you leave behind?
Force fields
You need to identify the forces that affect your career or career decision. And differentiate between the positive and negative forces that make career decisions more difficult or easier.
Drawing timelines
A common tool used for reviewing what has happened in the past as well as what might happen in the future. Put key events in your working life above a horizontal line.
Five & Ten year plans
Looking at what you would hope to achieve or where you would like to be in five or ten years' time. Such plans should not be treated as absolute deadlines for achieving specific goals; just be sure that you are going along in the right direction and making good progress.

- What support have you had to identify your strengths and weaknesses?
- How up to date is your personal development plan?
- When did you last review your career?
- Have you got access to information and advice about career management and career planning?
- Do you know what career opportunities and / or future organisational skills you will require to reach your goals?
- Are you responsible for your own development?
- (If not - is the person involved committed to the process and do they give you the time and resources to make it happen?)
